Community Spotlight Series: Paul Bugg – Sharks
GUB’s Community Spotlight Series aims to shine a light on our community clubs that make up the majority of our weekly competitions.
We’ll be checking in with all club presidents to find out not only about them, but also some club history and what’s happening behind the scenes.

Tell us a bit about yourself and how long you’ve been affiliated with the club?
I’ve been involved with Sharks for close to 20 years, firstly as a parent, then as a coach, player and committee member. I have been President for 13 years and also serve on the GUB Competitions Working Group as Sharks representative.
What area of Geelong does club the represent?
Sharks originally grew out of the Grovedale area, however over time we have drawn players from all over the Geelong region. With our training base now at the Geelong Arena we are starting to see more players coming from the Geelong West & North Geelong area.
How long has your club been operational for and what are some of the historical milestones for the club?
Sharks Basketball Club Geelong – Club History
Sharks Basketball Club Geelong was established in 1992 when a small group of friends entered a couple of teams into local competition. Built on a passion for basketball and a strong sense of community, the club quickly grew as more players and families were drawn to its welcoming and inclusive environment.
From the beginning, Sharks focused on providing opportunities for players of all ages and abilities. The club developed a reputation for encouraging participation, supporting player development, and creating a positive, family-orientated culture. These values continue to underpin the club today.
Growth and Development
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, the Sharks steadily expanded, introducing more junior teams and strengthening pathways into senior competition. The club’s growth was driven by dedicated volunteers, coaches, and families who worked together to build a sustainable and supportive environment.
As numbers increased, Sharks became known for strong organisation, team culture, and a commitment to developing both players and coaches. This period laid the foundation for future success on and off the court.
Historic Breakthrough – 2013
The year 2013 marked a significant milestone in the club’s history. The Sharks Senior Women’s team secured the club’s first Division 1/Championship premiership, a breakthrough moment that demonstrated the club’s ability to compete at the highest domestic level.
This achievement sparked a period of sustained success, with Sharks teams going on to win a further 12 premierships across multiple competitions in the years since.
2013 also saw the awarding of the club’s first Life Memberships to Chris and Graeme Moore, recognising their outstanding contribution and dedication to the growth of Sharks Basketball Club. Since then, seven additional members have been awarded Life Membership, highlighting the club’s strong volunteer culture.
Innovation and Leadership
Sharks Basketball Club has also been a leader in grassroots development. The club became the first domestic club in Victoria to establish its own Aussie Hoops program, which had previously only been run by basketball associations. This initiative provided a direct entry point for young players and helped strengthen the club’s junior pathway.
This focus on development and inclusion has contributed significantly to participation growth, particularly in girls’ basketball.
All Abilities and Inclusive Participation
Over the years, Sharks has also become known as the “All Abilities” club, offering opportunities to any individual wanting to be involved in basketball. This inclusive philosophy has been central to the club’s identity and community impact.
Sharks were one of the foundation teams entered in the Geelong United Basketball All Abilities League and celebrated immediate success, taking out the inaugural Division 1 premiership. We were also recognised as the inaugural winner of the GUB Inclusive Club of the Year in 2025. These achievements reflected the club’s commitment to ensuring basketball is accessible to everyone, regardless of ability.
Growth in Female Participation
One of the club’s proudest achievements has been its commitment to supporting female participation. Sharks now field the largest number of female teams competing in Geelong United Basketball competitions, reflecting the club’s inclusive philosophy and strong development programs for girls.
This growth has helped create a clear pathway for female players from beginner level through to senior competition.
