VJBL Weekly Wrap – 22/5/26

Each week we’ll be selecting VJBL teams to be a part of our weekly wrap!

With round 9 of the 2026 season now in the books, check out all the latest from each of this week’s selected teams below:

U12 Girls 2: W 39-18

The GUB U12-2 Girls travelled away to Greensborough on Friday 22 May 2026 to take on Diamond Valley, coming away with a strong 39–18 victory.

The girls started the game with their usual intense defensive pressure, creating early turnovers and building an important lead from the outset. Their strong transition play was a highlight throughout the game, with confident passing and excellent teamwork allowing the team to consistently move the ball well up the court.

With the early lead established, it also provided an opportunity for some of our developing players to gain valuable extra game time and continue building confidence in match situations.

Despite the referees calling the game very tightly — resulting in one player from each team fouling out — the girls maintained a positive attitude and continued to focus on playing their style of basketball.

Great communication, consistent effort, and a positive team environment were once again key features of the performance. Overall, it was another excellent team effort from our girls.

U14 Boys 2: W 43-36

Great team work, super help defence and lots of trust in the system which gave us a great win tonight!

We got off to a super hot start with a 19 to 4 quarter and then had a battle of runs right to the end.

We had a couple of unforced errors and turnovers which saw a momentum shift in the 4th however to our boys credit they absorbed the pressure, took control of the game and closed it out for the win.

U14 Boys 4: W 66-30

Coming of a great team performance the week before that was backed up with a great training session last Sunday, we played an Eltham team looking to get back into the winners circle.

We started off well, our defence creating some great offensive opportunities that we capitalised on. Our boxing out, rebounding and court spacing in transition an absolute stand out.

Our opponents took the initiative early in the second quarter and slowed the game down. We didn’t take our chances and didn’t work hard enough defensively to get the ball back when we lost possession.

At the half, we spoke about being predictable and trusting each other at both ends of the floor, the main focus being our defence. If we don’t have the ball, get it back. The boys took note and the result was a 14 – 2 quarter.

That focus didn’t change for the fourth and we worked hard to carve out a 23 – 11 quarter, possibly the best 10 minutes of our season. Our transition game being a real strong point.

In a game where everyone hit the scoreboard, our top scorer was Spencer Pearson with 16, Logan Kirwan broke through with a well earned 12 points whilst Rhys Allan, Jarvis Wharton and Gregory Ang all finished with 7.

A great first half of our season, the improvement is evident. Do we rest or continue to develop? Only time will tell.

U14 Boys 7: W 85-43

After a scrappy even 1st quarter we went into the 2nd 2 points ahead.

We pulled it together and our defence improved 10 fold. 3rd quarter again we seemed to relax a bit but held our lead. 4th was where the show started. A 31-15 quarter was the best basketball I’ve seen the boys play. It had everything we’d been training at both ends of the court.

Special mention to TJ racking up 31 pts (at least half from O boards) 4 assists, 20 rebounds and 7 steals.

U18 Boys 4: W 53-45

Geelong United U18 Boys 4 hit the halfway mark of the season with a gritty 53–45 win over Geelong United U18 Boys 3.

Having now played every team once, the 4’s sit second on the ladder at 7–2, putting themselves in a strong position heading into the back half of the season.

The defensive effort was the standout, with the group finishing with 11 team steals and making GU3 work hard for everything.

Offensively, there is still plenty to sharpen. The 4’s shot 39% on twos, 31% from three and 39% from the free throw line, which kept the game closer than it needed to be.

The positive is that the boys still found a way to win without everything clicking. There is plenty to tidy up, but plenty of upside too.
