VJBL Weekly Wrap – 5/12/25

Each week we’ll be selecting VJBL teams to be a part of our weekly wrap!

With another big night of VJBL grading games completed, check out all the latest from each of this week’s selected teams below:

U12 Girls 2: W 25-22

The Under 12 Girls 2 team made the trip to RecWest in Braybrook for what proved to be a highly competitive and physically demanding contest against a tall Westgate outfit. From the outset, the girls displayed exceptional energy, commitment and focus, rising to the challenge with impressive maturity.

The game presented adversity early on, with two players fouled out early in the second and third quarters. This left the team with no substitutions for the remainder of the match. Despite this significant setback, the girls demonstrated remarkable resilience, composure and adaptability. Operating with just five players on the floor, they continued to play smart by executing defensively, communicating effectively, and maintaining their intensity.

The team’s defensive effort was a standout feature of the match. Strong rebounding against a height disadvantage, combined with several timely steals, allowed the girls to generate important momentum and transition opportunities. Offensively, they remained disciplined and unselfish, moving the ball well and making smart decisions under pressure.

In the final minutes, their determination and teamwork were rewarded with a hard-earned 3-point victory — a true testament to their grit and refusal to give in.

This performance showcased not only individual effort, but also the collective strength and character of the group. It was a thrilling match to watch and an outstanding display of heart, teamwork and competitive spirit.

Congratulations to all players on an exceptional all-round performance.

U12 Boys 5: W 44-37

It was a even game 2 team takes turn to lead on the score board.

The 3rd and the 4th quarter saw GU team going strong the took the lead for the rest of the game.

U14 Boys 2: W 50-49

Sandringham 4s came out playing hard and got the jump on the Geelong boys.

With a slow start and a scoreline of 16 to 7 at the end of the first quarter the boys played well to come back and take the lead towards the end of the fourth quarter.

With a one point lead the Geelong boys defended well for the last 11 seconds to prevent the opponent’s scoring and were able to walk away with the win 50 to 49 and finish top of the grading pool.

U14 Boys 4: L 34-36

We traveled down to Eagle stadium for the second time in a row and played Broadmeadows 3’s.

The Broncos got the jump on us early and forged out a double figure lead pretty quickly. The boys dug in defensively and the scores were level at halftime. It was a tight contest from then on, all the way to the final buzzer. We had our chances but just couldn’t make the go ahead basket in the final minute.

William Bogemann top scored with 10, Rhys Allan stood out on both ends of the court, playing some brilliant defence whilst also adding 6 points and Joshua Staff hit two crucial 3’s for us, also adding 6 points.

U14 Boys 6: W 37-36

Our team played great – It was a nail biter game.

U14 Boys 7: L 52-55

After a slow start and being down by 16 at halftime the boys did an amazing job to bring the game back on their terms with hard pressing, better shooting and utilising all players on the court.

Unfortunately a 3 on the buzzer to tie didn’t drop but they can all go home proud of their efforts and growth. Certainly a win in my books.

U16 Girls 4: Draw 48-48

We started slow and a little bit disorganised. Gave up a quick 10 point lead, but after an early time out, we regrouped and continued to work on our offensive transition and aggressive attack.

The game became an arm wrestle with the lead not changing significantly until the 4th quarter.

The team then focused on applying as much defensive pressure as it can and fought to regain the lead. The lead was gained late in the 4th and after some goal for goal plays, we secured a draw.

U16 Boys 4: L 38-46

Undermanned tonight with only 7 players and one of those players carrying an injury.

The boys played well, kicking the ball on, finding the open player and stepping up in defence.

But they just ran out of legs in the last quarter and were overrun. Great effort though.

U18 Girls 2: L 26-60

Tough Road trip with limited players and car troubles on the way.

Understanding we had a tall task up against a talented and physical team, our effort and intensity throughout the game enabled the process to outshine the outcome, well played girls
