VJBL Weekly Wrap – 19/6/26

Each week we’ll be selecting VJBL teams to be a part of our weekly wrap!

With round 10 of the 2026 season now in the books, check out all the latest from each of this week’s selected teams below:

U14 Boys 4: W 63-43

We travelled to Wallan to face a well coached Wangaratta side anticipating a tough contest. Always a tough journey, our squad was ready for anything the Bushrangers would throw at us.

Our starting five took some time to adjust to the playing conditions but once they got that on good terms, the process took over. Get the ball back when we don’t have it, take advantage when we do, if only the great game of basketball was that simple.

The first half could best be described as a struggle. A struggle for consistency. It didn’t get much better.

We built a lead through the struggle, every time down the floor a new adventure. Our squad led by 17 at the half, just by playing basketball the GUB way, the only way. It wasn’t pretty!

The whistle got louder in the third, we started the fourth with a 12 point lead.

At the last break, we spoke about just being us. Control what we could and live in the chaos, that’s basketball. The boys ended the contest 20 points up. The final three minutes a true reflection of what this squad is capable of, given the chance.

Rhys Allan locked down every opponent he faced, playing some amazing defence that got us moving the ball to advantage. Rhys finished with 7 points and 5 steals. Logan Kirwan was Logan Kirwan, 6 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 1 block and 5 steals, what a game. Gregory Ang added 14 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists and 6 steals, a true reflection of his ability to influence any game. Our bigs were BIG. Jaxon Whitten added 10 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, William Bogemann contributed with an 11 point, 6 rebound game adding 2 blocks.

Joshua Staff was extremely influential in the contest, defensively astounding, taking away any advantage, every time. Micah Barrie was as always a solid contributor offensively and defensively. Sebastian Fuller and Jarvis Wharton provided all round skillsets to give us a spark when it was required.

U14 Boys 7: W 55-41

These boys went out for redemption and boy did they get it.

From tip off until the final buzzer they did not relent. It was easily the best team performance of the season so far. Collingwood had very few answers to our pressure finding themselves 25pts behind leading into 3/4 time.

Collingwood made a slight come back but our boys found another gear and took the game out.

A great birthday present for Billy.

U16 Boys 9: L 31-74

The Boys had a tough game on Friday night against a strong Bacchus Marsh U16B4.

They learnt a lot from this and hopefully can grow from the experience and bring it next week.

We attended Read The Play session as a full cohesive team today, then followed up with Team Building at Laser Quest in Geelong – They had a ball!

U18 Boys 4: W 59-46

Balanced guard play and disruptive defense carried a 59-46 win against a strong Keilor 3’s, with Zach Price leading the scoring at 14 points and Zachariah Staff stuffing the line with 12 points, 7 assists, and 4 steals.

The group turned defense into offense with 12 team steals and kept the ball popping, registering 17 assists on 21 field goals. Patrick Cooper’s efficiency stood out at 10 points on perfect shooting from the field and 6 of 9 at the line, while Levi Fryer added 11 on 71 percent shooting. Sharpening the edge from deep would stretch future leads, as 3 of 18 from three limited the cushion despite the strong all-around effort.

A warm welcome also to Micah Staff, who joined the coaching staff as Assistant Coach this week. Great to have another set of eyes and energy on the bench, and we look forward to his contribution to the group for the remainder of the season.
