BigV VYC Coaches Weekend Rundown – Friday April 17

In the lead up to every BigV home game of the 2026 season, we’ll be checking in with the coaches to see how everything is shaping up for the game.

How are we expected to perform? Who should we be looking out for to fill the stat sheet? What are the keys to a big win?

It’s all answered here with the Coaches Weekend Rundown!

BigV VYC Men: Head Coach, Luke Beard

What were your takeaways from your previous game, and who were your standout performers?

Our team continues to develop and showed a real maturity when headed by Keilor to stick to our structure and game. Keegan Johnson had an outstanding game at the point and Ryan Drinkwater was huge with a 15 rebound double/double.

How has the teams preparation been in the lead up to the game?

We had a really good session Monday and that flowed through to our Thursday night training. The team are excited to go up against the competition benchmark.

What are some of the key matchups for the game?

We will have our hands full stopping Kilsyth’s perimeter game, the likes of Haig, Ghosn and Vincent all have a 3 point percentage above 40.

What are some other key areas you’ll be looking to control in the game?

We will be working to contain them offensively and then build momentum through those stops.

What’s your final message for the fans?

Our hometown support has been unreal, we love being able to represent our club and the pathway for all our junior athletes. Keep that strong support coming!

BigV VYC Women: Head Coach, Simon Nicholson

What were your takeaways from your previous game, and who were your standout performers?

We’ll be looking to bounce back tonight after a previous tough weekend. Having a double header against 2 of the top teams in the comp and a clash with NBL1 on sunday lead to some tough results. It was great to get some minutes into our bench give them a chance to grow with in game reps.

How has the teams preparation been in the lead up to this weekend?

Its been a solid week on the training court. We’re really stripping back to the core principals – We know when we exacute them well it will lead to a win. So keeping it as simple as we can for the group.

What are some of the key matchups for the game?

Diamond Valley come in undefeated with a really balanced scoring attack and some disruptive defence, so this is a game where we need to lock in on them as a team over 1 or 2 key players.

What are some other key areas you’ll be looking to control in the game?

Really looking to value the ball, Diamond Valley love to change it up on D and extend into the full court, so valuing the ball and not alowing any easy buckets from them off turnovers will be key.

What’s your final message for the fans?

It has been great seeing the crowd numbers at Y/L growing, and we appreciate the support. This team has a lot of heart and will continue to put it all out there on the floor for you.

Geelong United’s VYC Women’s squad take Diamond Valley, with our VYC Men taking on Kilsyth tonight from 6:30pm at the Geelong Arena.
Tickets will be available at the door.
