Community Spotlight Series: Craig Cole – Rovers

GUB’s Communmity Spotlight Series aims to shine a light on our community clubs that make up the majority of our weekly competitions.

We’ll be checking in with all club presidents to find out not only about them, but also some club history and what’s happening behind the scenes.

Tell us a bit about yourself and how long you’ve been affiliated with the club?

My first involvement with Rovers was when I first started coaching my sons teams. After a few years I joined the committee and was the junior boys coordinator.

In 2011 I took on the role of President and have been in that position ever since. I also played in a Senior men’s team for a number of years.

I currently coach my daughters women’s team and an all abilities team. I am proud to say that my all abilities team has just completed the threepeat and won its third straight grand final.

What area of Geelong does club the represent?

While we have players from all over Geelong, our largest player base is south of the Barwon River which includes Belmont, Grovedale, Highton, Waurn Ponds, Armstrong Creek and Mount Dunneed.

How long has your club been operational for and what are some of the historical milestones for the club?

Rovers was founded in 1952 and was called East Rovers as we were originally based in East Geelong.

What does the future hold for your club?

We are planning to grow our team base and create a pathway where we will soon have both Championship men’s and women’s teams again. We also plan to expand out all abilities and wheelchair programs.
