Geelong United Basketball (GUB) is being praised this week for taking a strong stand against poor behaviour and setting a positive example within the local sporting community.
Led by GUB’s General Manager of Community, Emily Todorov, a range of new measures have recently been introduced to help improve behaviour and accountability at community basketball games. Among those initiatives is the public display of disciplinary sanctions issued by Basketball Victoria for incidents that occur at Geelong United community games.
Now displayed at GUB’s main venue, Beyond Bank Stadium, the first initial and surname of suspended individuals, along with their team name and the length of their suspension, are visible for all patrons to see. As reported in the Geelong Advertiser over the weekend, the initiative is designed to act as a deterrent and reinforce expectations around respectful behaviour.
Speaking with ABC Melbourne’s Bob Murphy and Richelle Hunt earlier this week, Emily said the measures are necessary to support the vast majority of participants who contribute positively to the basketball community.
“The majority of people are fantastic and a lot of parents are calling each other out and pulling each other into line. So it is that very small handful. We’re never going to be perfect, but we can just try our best and make sure we’ve got that culture right.”
The initiative reflects Geelong United Basketball’s ongoing commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive and respectful environment for players, officials, volunteers and spectators across all levels of the game.
