In the lead up to every BigV home game of the 2026 season, we’ll be checking in with the coaches to see how everything is shaping up for the game.
How are we expected to perform? Who should we be looking out for to fill the stat sheet? What are the keys to a big win?
It’s all answered here with the Coaches Weekend Rundown!
BigV VYC Women: Head Coach, Simon Nicholson
What were your takeaways from your previous game, and who were your standout performers?
From an individual standpoint, I thought Aleks Connolly gave us great composure and leadership, while Ameir Majur was outstanding around the rim on both ends of the floor. It was nice to be able to welcome Mackenzie, Aleks and Ameir back into the group
How has the teams preparation been in the lead up to the game?
The group has trained really well. The energy has been high and there’s been a strong focus on improving the little things that make a difference in games. We’ve spent time cleaning up our execution at both ends of the floor, but also making sure we’re staying true to the way we want to play.
What are some of the key matchups for the game?
Being able to slow down Taia McMechan in the full court and limiting her ability to control the offence is key for us, along with limiting a few of there shooters from getting comfortable
What are some other key areas you’ll be looking to control in the game?
Winning our 1v1 battles is a big one for us. We want to limit our rotations and limit their ability to get feet in the paint
We’ll also be looking after the basketball. Limiting turnovers and making smart decisions allows us to control the tempo of the game. If we can defend, rebound, take care of the ball and play with good pace, we’ll put ourselves in a strong position
What’s your final message for the fans?
The support we’ve had throughout the season has been fantastic and the players genuinely appreciate it. Playing at home with the crowd behind us always gives the group an extra lift.
This group plays hard, represents Geelong with pride, and we’d love to have as many people there as possible supporting them. Hopefully we can put on a great performance for everyone.
