In the lead up to every BigV home game of the 2026 season, we’ll be checking in with the coaches to see how everything is shaping up for the game.
How are we expected to perform? Who should we be looking out for to fill the stat sheet? What are the keys to a big win?
It’s all answered here with the Coaches Weekend Rundown!
BigV VYC Women: Head Coach, Simon Nicholson
What were your takeaways from your previous game, and who were your standout performers?
Really proud of the group last week in a tough game. Only having 8 due to a clash with NBL1, the group moved the ball well on offense and were disruptive in defence leading to being up in the game at 3qt time before running out of legs in the 4th. Grace was solid from the start finishing with 19pts and 8rebs, along with Matilda having a double double of 16pts and 12rebs.
How has the teams preparation been in the lead up to the game?
The group is continuing to really grow from having the chance to train with our NBL1 group week in and week out. This has led to a lot of players taking some big steps in their development.
What are some of the key matchups for the game?
Slowing down Geelong Venom DP Georgia Taylor will be key, with her averaging over 20pts per game and being a real engine for them.
What are some other key areas you’ll be looking to control in the game?
Dandenong are a heavy Pick and Roll team, so we’ll be looking to take away their ability to get feet in the paint off their Pick and Rolls. We’ll also be doing our best to win the transition game on both sides of the ball and work to get easy baskets in transition.
What’s your final message for the fans?
Really looking forward to being the opening game for our NBL1 teams and showcasing the steps forward we have taken as a group. It’ll be a great opportunity to showcase how many of our players have been helped by NBL1 exposure to progress. We’ll be doing our very best to get the night started in the right fashion.
Geelong United’s VYC Women’s squad take Dandenong tomorrow from 3pm at the Geelong Arena.
