GUB’s Community Spotlight Series aims to shine a light on our community clubs that make up the majority of our weekly competitions.
We’ll be checking in with all club presidents to find out not only about them, but also some club history and what’s happening behind the scenes.

Tell us a bit about yourself and how long you’ve been affiliated with the club?
Basketball has been a big part of my life, from playing in Geelong for Tigers in the late 1960s to coaching domestically and VJBL representative at Kilsyth Cobras.
I managed the Kilsyth Cobras representative boy’s program (1999–2004) and, after more than 25 years coaching at VC level, was honoured with Life Membership in 2012.
After moving to Torquay in 2013 I coached Geelong’s Under 16 1’s until 2017, and in 2019 I started helping a local Under 12 team in the SBA domestic competition, an experience that helped spark Torquay Coast Basketball Club.
I’ve been proud to serve as President since the club formed in 2023.
What area of Geelong does club the represent?
We mainly draw players from Torquay and the Surf Coast, along with families from across the Geelong region. We’re proudly volunteer-run, with a great group supporting coaching, teams, and game-day operations.
How long has your club been operational for and what are some of the historical milestones for the club?
Torquay Coast Basketball Club was founded in February 2023, built from a grassroots group of junior players and families.
Since then, we’ve incorporated and grown into teams competing in SBA domestic and Geelong competitions, while staying welcoming and inclusive for all skill levels.
What does the future hold for your club?
Kids first. Community always. High standards every session—respect, discipline, and teamwork.
Our “why” is simple: give every child a positive basketball home where they belong and keep improving, whatever their starting point. We run team training plus dedicated boys’ and girls’ development sessions, and this season introduced Little Hoops for new players.
Next up: more development options (including individual/small-group sessions) and continued investment in coach development.
