U12 Girls 2: L 25-28
Geelong United U12(2) Girls put in a determined and spirited performance against Hawthorn U12(2), going down narrowly 28–25 in a hard-fought contest.
The game, played after a long trip to the Boroondara Sports Complex in Balwyn North, was a great effort from the team given the added challenge of travel. The stadium conditions were also quite warm, which made for tough playing conditions and added to the physical demands on the girls.
From the outset, the game was played at a high intensity, with Hawthorn applying a fast-paced, full-court press that challenged our ball movement and decision-making throughout. They also held a noticeable height advantage across much of the court, making scoring in the key more difficult and contesting rebounds strongly.
Despite these challenges, the Geelong United girls showed resilience and composure, matching the opposition for effort and staying competitive from start to finish. The game remained close the entire way, reflecting the team’s strong defensive pressure and willingness to fight for every possession.
In the final minutes, a short run of missed scoring opportunities proved costly, allowing Hawthorn to edge ahead and secure the win. While the result was disappointing, the performance highlighted plenty of positives and valuable lessons moving forward.
The team can take confidence from such a closely contested game, with clear areas to build on in handling pressure, shot selection, and finishing under fatigue.
Overall, it was a strong team effort in a competitive match, with plenty to learn from and carry into future games.
U14 Boys 2: W 63-39
Exceptional team performance at both ends of the floor.
Major highlights being the boys kept the other team to only 4 points in quarter 3, everyone played with high intensity with defence first style of play and played amazing as a team, giving up good shots for great shots.
Well deserved result for our young men!
U14 Boys 4: W 43-34
We made the trip down to Wallan for our round three clash with the Wangaratta 2s.
We got off to a hot start thanks to some tough defence by Rhys Allan and Sebastian Fuller that led to some uncontested transition baskets and a handy lead early.
Our second unit led by Logan Kirwan continued the dogged defence and we stayed in front the rest of the way in what was a hard fought contest.
It was a tough, physical game that wasn’t allowed to flow but we worked through that and the squad will only benefit from the way we handled some tough situations.
Top scorers were Jaxon Whitten with 13, Rhys Allan added 8 whilst Sebastian Fuller and William Bogemann finished with 7 respectively.
Great result team, another paver to add to the path we are looking to walk this season. On to the next.
U18 Girls 2: W 29-23
An emphasis on decision making and being aggressive with the ball resulted in a good team performance and a nice win against a tough Sunbury side.
Everyone stepped up to take some extra responsibility with a player out. Well done girls!
