Monica a capital gain for Canberra

Fresh from helping Japan to a silver medal at the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup, Hoop City Geelong United Supercat Monica Okoye has signed with WNBL club Unversity of Canberra Capitals.

Okoye, who will return to the Geelong United roster this week after nearly two months away while preparing for the Asia Cup, was announced as a signing on Monday morning.

“I understand that the WNBL is very competitive, and as a player coming from Japan, I want to challenge myself to see how far I can go,” Monica told the Capitals’ website.

“I received advice from many people and decided to sign with Canberra because of the high level of competition in the WNBL, and Australia suits my living environment.

“I feel very comfortable there.”

Okoye, who a silver medal with Japan at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, averaged 10 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in seven matches with Geelong United.

At the Asia Cup, she averaged 10.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.2 assists. She had a tournament-best 20 points in the final pool game against Australia.

“Monica will be a point of difference in the WNBL next season,” Capitals coach Kristen Veal said.

“She can shoot the three-pointer from range, handle and pass like a guard, and play with physicality.

“She is a wonderful teammate who will fit seamlessly into the Caps lineup, no doubt quickly becoming a fan favourite and playing with the joy that is becoming synonymous with this new-era Caps.”
