Geelong United Youth League Preview | Round 16

Two more chances to lock away a Big V Youth League 1 finals berth present themselves for the Navexa Geelong United Men this weekend.

United (4th, 13-6) will host second-placed Hume City (15-5) at Geelong Arena on Saturday afternoon before making the short trip to Werribee for a meeting with ladder leader Wyndham (16-4).

“To say this is a big weekend for our team is an understatement,” coach Luke Beard said.

“We know our best is good enough, but the time for talk is over. I truly believe our list can compete with the best this division has to offer.

“I’m excited to see how our squad stacks up. Hopefully, we can lock in a finals appearance and continue to work from there.

“Disciplined defence and an attacking mentality offensively will be what we’re about for both games.”

The Broncos used a 42-17 third period in their Round 7 meeting to claim a 99-75 victory against a Geelong United lineup without NBL1 trio Jack Terrill, Jack Moran and Jay Posterino.

Those three are expected to suit up this time around.

The following week, United outlasted Wyndham in a high-scoring affair at Geelong Arena, 121-97, with Moran the standout with 26 points on 59 per cent shooting.

One win will be enough to ensure post-action. However, two losses and wins for Camberwell (6th, 12-7) and Keysborough (7th, 11-8), who both have double-headers, could leave Coach Beard’s men needing to beat Sherbrooke, which sits third heading into Round 16, on the final day of the season to finish inside the top six.

Meanwhile, the Navexa Geelong United Youth League Women face a challenging meeting with Wyndham (4th, 14-5) in their penultimate match of a tough season.

When the two teams met at Geelong Arena in Round 8, Geelong United trailed by just two points at halftime.

However, the visitors used a 26-10 third quarter to take the game away from Jason Bannerman’s squad, claiming an 81-59 victory.

After suiting up just five players last week, Bannerman should get back captain Vanessa Marsh and youngster Annie Poon.
