United looks for payback

If extending the NBL1 South longest current men’s winning streak isn’t enough motivation for the Hoop City Geelong United Supercats to take down Bendigo on Saturday night, then the Round 2 loss to the Braves should add fuel to that fire.

With captain DeMarcus Gatlin sidelined, United was outscored 50-32 in the second half, suffering a 96-86 loss in one of only three wins for the season for Bendigo.

However, Geelong United has strung together six consecutive wins after starting the season 0-4, including taking down 5th-placed Nunawading last week to retain a spot inside the top eight.

“We need to keep building and keep getting better each day,” coach Grant Wallace said.

“There are no easy games in this league, and Bendigo at home is always a tough assignment.

“But we owe them one, as we felt we let one slip to them earlier in the season at our home.”

NBL1 WOMEN | TEST OF PROGRESS

Lat Mayen has been a standout in a tough first half of the season for the Braves, who parted company with former Geelong guard Isaac Turner last month.

Mayen, a teammate of United star Gabe Hadley at NBL club Cairns Taipans last summer, is averaging a team-high 21.1 points per game while also grabbing 7.1 rebounds.

Hadley continues to pace the league’s scoring at 26.1 points per game, including 33 and 32 in wins over the Spectes and North West Tasmania, respectively, in the absence of George Blagojevic.
