Test of progress for United

NBL1’s biggest challenge confronts the Hoop City Geelong United Supercats women when they travel to Bendigo for a clash with the unbeaten Braves on Saturday night.

In what will be the second meeting between the two teams this season, United (7-3) will further test their championship credentials against a star-studded Bendigo lineup.

The previous meeting, in Round 2, resulted in a three-point win for the Braves at Geelong Arena against a United lineup yet to add Opals squad member Chantel Horvat and Polish National Team star Agnieszka Skobel.

Coach Matthew Paton says his roster is keen to test itself against the competition’s benchmark.

“Geelong games against Bendigo always produce a great spectacle, and this weekend promises to be no different,” he said.

“They are the lone undefeated team in the NBL1 South – men or women – so they are the measuring stick for the rest of the league.

“They boast a wealth of WNBL talent, but we have added a couple of key pieces ourselves since we first played them in Round 2, so we are excited to head to Bendigo and see just how far we have progressed as a team.”

NBL1 MEN | UNITED LOOKS FOR PAYBACK

Megan McKay (24.4 ppg) and Amy Atwell (21.4 ppg) lead the scoring for Bendigo.

However, the creativity of veteran playmaker Kelly Wilson is the key for the Braves.

She is averaging a stunning 12.1 assists per game, which is nearly five dimes a game more than the next best in the conference.

Co-captain Sarah Elsworthy is likely to be tasked with quelling Wilson’s influence.
