Puttin’ on the Blitz

The penultimate weekend of the pre-season has seen the Hoop City Geelong United Supercats travel around the bay to Frankston for the NBL1 South Blitz.

The women’s roster made two appearances, suffering losses to Diamond Valley and Casey.

In their first outing, the Supercats fell 75-50 to the Eagles, while the Cavaliers had the better of Matt Paton’s roster 83-68.

“Both games exhibited a pleasing amount of competitiveness, especially given who was available and who we still have to come into the team,” Paton said.

“It was a great development opportunity for the under-18 players that joined the squad for the weekend.”

The Supercats men featured just once on the weekend, suffering a 92-78 loss to Sandringham.

It was the first defeat of the pre-season for Grant Wallace’s roster, following wins over Knox, Bendigo and Ballarat.

“Another step in our season’s preparation,” coach Grant Wallace said.

“Sandringham has a talented and deep roster, and without a couple of our key players, we learnt much.

“Our young players continue to grow and develop.”

The Supercats men will meet Knox next Sunday at the State Basketball Centre to round out their pre-season.

The Geelong United Supercats men and women open their 2023 NBL1 South campaigns against Kilsyth at Kilsyth on Saturday, April 1.

The first home game at Geelong Arena is against the Bendigo Braves on April 15.
