In the lead up to every BigV home game of the 2026 season, we’ll be checking in with the coaches to see how everything is shaping up for the game.
How are we expected to perform? Who should we be looking out for to fill the stat sheet? What are the keys to a big win?
It’s all answered here with the Coaches Weekend Rundown!
BigV VYC Men: Head Coach, Luke Beard
What were your takeaways from your previous game, and who were your standout performers?
The key takeaway from last weekend’s game is that our best is good enough. The challenge we now face is reaching that level with consistency every time we hit the floor.
How has the teams preparation been in the lead up to this weekend?
The team are in good spirits, we’re building some real positive momentum with everyone buying in to what we want to build.
What are some of the key matchups for the game?
Casey are a strong team that have multiple offensive avenues. Our aim, as always, is to work together to ensure we’re disrupting their rhythm.
What are some other key areas you’ll be looking to control in the game?
We want to control the pace of the game and ensure we’re not being rushed or dictated to, this will be done by our ability to absorb defensive pressure and have the patience to work through our structures.
What’s your final message for the fans?
It is a quadruple header this weekend, all four senior teams at one venue, what a great day for anyone that loves the game!
BigV VYC Women: Head Coach, Simon Nicholson
What were your takeaways from your previous game, and who were your standout performers?
While the group is yet to get a win on the board, they continue to take big steps forward given our short prep time. The girls continue to buy in and have showed glimpses of the great basketball they can play. Mackenzie Drew in particular made a solid contribution all round with 11pts 8 rebounds and 6 assists.
How has the teams preparation been in the lead up to this weekend?
We have had our strongest training week to date, and through the two games played so far we’ve been able to identify some clear areas we need to focus on.
What are some of the key matchups for the game?
Casey are a team that like to get out and run, so slowing them early will be huge especially Mica Nightingale.
What are some other key areas you’ll be looking to control in the game?
Casey like to play a similar way to us, so winning the transition game on both side of the ball will be huge. The rebound count will also play a big factor throughout the contest.
What’s your final message for the fans?
Its going to a massive day of basketball with NBL1 kicking off, and we look forward to getting the crowd going early and be the first of hopefully 4 wins.
Geelong United’s VYC Men’s & Women’s squad take on Casey tomorrow afternoon from 1pm at the Geelong Arena.
