BigV VYC Coaches Weekend Rundown – Saturday April 11

In the lead up to every BigV home game of the 2026 season, we’ll be checking in with the coaches to see how everything is shaping up for the game.

How are we expected to perform? Who should we be looking out for to fill the stat sheet? What are the keys to a big win?

It’s all answered here with the Coaches Weekend Rundown!

BigV VYC Men: Head Coach, Luke Beard

What were your takeaways from your previous game, and who were your standout performers?

The team continues to build consistency in our performance with a focus on the defensive end of the court. The standout for this group is the buy in to We over Me!

How has the teams preparation been in the lead up to this weekend?

After the Easter break it was good to get back on the training floor and prepare for Saturday. The team enjoy being together and you can see that in their energy.

What are some of the key matchups for the game?

Keilor’s big is great on the boards, so without Phil this weekend we will be looking to rebound as a collective. There will also be a key match-up in the PG position.

What are some other key areas you’ll be looking to control in the game?

Flow and consistency will be a big key for us – We can’t get content with playing a good quarter or half, we’re striving to put together four quarters every time we hit the floor.

What’s your final message for the fans?

The crowd support at home games has been amazing. We love the noise of a home crowd and appreciate anyone getting behind the program.

BigV VYC Women: Head Coach, Simon Nicholson

What were your takeaways from your previous game, and who were your standout performers?

It was great to get our first win in Youth Champ in Knox on the back end of a double header weekend. The team are starting to really click and find their groove after the short prep we had leading into the season. In the win against Knox we had a ballanced attack with 4 players scoring double digits, Grace and Ameir having double-double games.

How has the teams preparation been in the lead up to this weekend?

We’ve had another strong training week. There’s been a real focus on tightening things up on the defensive end.

What are some of the key matchups for the game?

A big focus for us is going to be trying to slow Keilor’s Macey Boyle. She’s having a great season so far averaging 20pts per game, so if we can stop that impact that’ll be a real positive for us.

What are some other key areas you’ll be looking to control in the game?

The transition game is a big one for us on both sides of the ball, along with limiting their points in the paint. Strong defense and taking control of the boards will be a key factor.

What’s your final message for the fans?

Keilor have been the standard in Youth Champ over the last few years, so this game will be a good test of where we are. We come in with a lot of confidence on the back of last weekend’s win, and will be looking to get our first home win in front of another solid home crowd, so make sure you get out and support our squad in what should be a great contest.

Geelong United’s VYC Men’s & Women’s squad take on Keilor tomorrow from 5pm at the Geelong Arena.
Tickets will be available at the door.
