VJBL Weekly Wrap – 6/3/26

Each week we’ll be selecting VJBL teams to be a part of our weekly wrap!

With round 1 of the 2026 season now in the books, check out all the latest from each of this week’s selected teams below:

U12 Girls 2: W 27-22

It was a long trip for the Geelong United (2) Girls, travelling down to Slater Reserve Stadium in Blackburn for Round 1 where they faced Blackburn Girls 1.

Despite again giving up significant height across the court, our girls came ready to play. The team went straight to work, putting on a defensive masterclass. Their relentless pressure caused headaches for Blackburn’s ball handlers all night, with countless interceptions created through outstanding defensive intensity and teamwork.

For most of the game our defence set the tone. There was only a brief lapse of around three minutes where Blackburn managed to close the gap, but the girls quickly regrouped and returned to their strong defensive structure.

This is a team that fights incredibly hard for one another, and that determination was on full display throughout the game.

A fantastic team effort to start the season, with Geelong United defeating Blackburn 27–22. A great Round 1 win on the road.

U14 Boys 2: L 28-39

Was super proud of the boys they played with high effort and energy they showed their ability to be unselfish, making the decision to give up a good shot for a great shot.

While the result didn’t go our way, we know what we need to work on and all the boys are looking forward to our next game.

U14 Girls 3: W 33-20

The 14G3 girls started their season with a strong win against Surfcoasters 2.

Defence was strong from the tip & after a slow start offensively, they got their structures together & shots started to fall from open looks.

Every single team member contributed strongly, which was really pleasing.

U14 Boys 4: W 40-33

After grading well and earning a spot in VJL7, we started our season with a contest against the Coburg Giants 3’s at the Arena.

Our starters for the night began well, getting us out to a 7 point lead by the end of the first. Our bench was exceptional, playing some valuable minutes in the second, especially defensively and this had us out to a 9 point lead at the half.

Our focus has been on defence creating offence so far this season and the boys played some great half court man, denying our opponents any flow and this created some great chances for us.
We were challenged at times in the second half but responded every single time, hitting some big shots and playing some tough team defence and ended up winning by 7.

Joshua Staff finished with 11 points and William Bogemann added 10. Everyone contributed at both ends of the floor in a really even team performance, defence will be our strongest asset moving forward.

U14 Boys 7: W 47-40

Having gone down by 18 to the same team last week our boys went out firing.

They correct the wrongs from last week and managed to win by 7. Every aspect of our game improved especially our board at both ends, shot percentage and defensive pressure.

The boys should be very proud of the turn around in the last 7 days.

U18 Girls 2: W 32-31

Starting the season with a nail biter of a game, down one player the girls really stepped up and committed to working hard all 4 quarters.

Zoe and Meadow did an excellent job of defending some strong interior opposition, Fearne battled on the boards all night, Aylish and Sarrah had some great highlight plays and decision making whilst Maya and Rhiannon stayed aggressive on both ends all night.

A well rounded team performance.
