Geelong United is proud to acknowledge that the land we call home is and has always been Wathaurong Country. We pay our respects to Elders past, present, and to all Aboriginal people on Country, who have contributed to the diverse Aboriginal cultural society we have today and in to the future.
With our entry into the WNBL, we will continue to show our appreciation and respect to the Wathaurong Community through our jersey, worn year round throughout all competitions Geelong United competes in, featuring artwork by local artist, David Flagg.
Sitting down with David, we asked him about the meaning behind the jersey – “The design represents unity,” he said. “Everyone involved in the club is family. It doesn’t matter what part – coach, player, supporter, you’re all part of the Geelong United family.”
Geelong supporters and players are of course no stranger to the design, with it currently being used at all levels in which Geelong United competes – VJBL, Big V, NBL1, and now on a national level in the WNBL – “I love that it’s not just a once off per season design, it’s a part of the club now,” David said. “It’s there to be seen all year round, which is great.”
For our WNBL players who this year are donning the jersey for the first time, David says it’s time to embrace it – “Welcome to the family. The jersey represents you so do it proud.”
