Geelong United Youth League Women Review | Round 17

Vanessa Marsh has had a Youth League farewell to remember as the Navexa Geelong United women finished a tough Big V season in fine style with a 53-point win over Warrandyte at Geelong Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Marsh, who spent six years in the program, fell agonisingly short of a triple-double after posting nine points, ten assists, nine steals and five rebounds in the 106-53 victory – Geelong United’s fifth of the season.

Coach Jason Bannerman was quick to pay tribute to his outgoing captain.

“She’s intense, she’s vocal, she’s constructive all the time, she’s positive with all the girls,” Coach Bannerman said.

“She wears her heart on her sleeve.

“It was good to see somebody like her play with that passion.”

Coach Bannerman said the win was a reward for effort for the seven players who saw out the season.

“With the work they’ve had to put in after coming up against sides that press up the whole game, fatigue sets in after a little while,” he said.

“I’m pretty proud of them.”

STATS: GEELONG UNITED YLW VS. WARRANDYTE

Marsh was the only member of the seven not to score in double figures in an even team performance.

Jasmine King paced Geelong United’s scoring with 20 points while dishing six assists.

Mid-season addition Annie Poon went 6-10 from beyond the arc on her way to 20 points. She also had six assists.

Like Marsh, Kayla Blazko flirted with a triple-double, tallying 17 points, 16 rebounds, seven steals and four assists.

Casidhe Green fell just short of a double-double with a 17-point, nine-rebound outing.

Miley Dawkins did get to a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Brooke Egan played quality minutes that resulted in 10 points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists.
