Beard looks for others to step up

With Hamish Goodier set for an extended stint on the sidelines with a broken foot, Navexa Geelong United Men’s coach Luke Beard has urged others to step up in his absence in the run to the Big V Youth League One men’s playoffs.

Goodier, who returned from Altona for the 2023 season, was averaging 11.9ppg, 6.2rpg and 2.5apg before suffering the injury in the win over Bulleen before the King’s Birthday break.

“With Hamish still in recovery, we will get to see a few of the team step up and make their mark”, Coach Beard said.

“The beauty of our roster is our depth and flexibility.”

Geelong United (4th, 10-4) returns to action against Altona (11th, 2-11) at Geelong Arena on Saturday afternoon, needing a win to stay in touch with the top two.

“We’re all really excited to be back on the court after the break,” Beard said.

“Training has been really energetic, and the team love playing in front of their home crowd,”

“We know at our best we can beat Altona, so it’s about getting the job done and continuing to work towards locking in that top-six finish.”

When the two teams met in Round 3, Geelong United registered a comfortable 99-52 victory.

Meanwhile, the Navexa Geelong United Youth League Women head to Pakenham hoping for an against-the-odds win.

Coach Jason Bannerman will have a maximum of seven players to call on for the return meeting with the Warriors.

“It gives an opportunity for some great minutes,” Coach Bannerman said.
“When we stick to the game plan, we are more than capable and competitive.
“It will be testing but a great challenge.”
