Championship Men and Women round 16 review

Round 16 was not short of big game performances as we hit the final two weeks of the regular season, with spots in finals still up for grabs check out how your club’s teams went below!

CHAMPIONSHIP WOMEN

PIVOT CITY 65 – 37 SURFCOASTERS

A low-scoring affair in the first game of the night saw the Pivot City Women come alive to snatch a 22-point lead in round 16. In a 14-8 first quarter, Pivot was able to clamp up defensively to grab an impressive 22-point lead with 10 to play, holding the Coasters to single-digit scoring through 30 minutes. The final 10 saw both teams even out the scoring at 15 a piece as Pivot came away winners. Raini Matthews was on fire connecting on 7 threes for her 21 points while Eve Braslis contributed 17. For the Surfcoasters, it was Maya Malone with 10 to lead the way.

SHARKS 97 – 55 CC EAGLES

Sharks have maintained their undefeated record for another week as they came away 42-point winners over the Eagles in round 16. Leading by 2 at the half, the Sharks locked in and went on a scoring run that saw them easily pull away from the Eagles behind an impressive scoring tally from Georgia Varley who led the game with 33. Ebony Rolph and Kate Duff were also great contributing 23 and 22 respectively. For the Eagles, it was Oliva Cameron with 18 top scoring.

CHAMPIONSHIP MEN

SURFCOASTERS 69 – 66 SHARKS

Surfcoasters have escaped with a 3-point nail-bitter against Sharks in round 16. In a game in which neither team led by more than 4 at any major break, it was Surfcoast who were able to come out on top in this one. Nursing a one-point lead going into the final quarter, they were able to outlast the Sharks behind a 30 bomb from Jack Moran. For the Sharks it was Brad Jones with 17 while Lachie Wilson and Ben Barrett contributed 15 each.

LARA 115 – 64 VYTIS

Lara were not short of scoring in round 16 as they pulled out a very impressive 51-point demolition of Vytis on Tuesday night. Starting out how the Giants jumped out to a 16-point lead and never looked back. By three-quarter time the lead was out to 34 points but it didn’t stop there as the Giants spent the last 10 minutes connecting on everything as they finished the quarter with a massive 37 points. Jackson Bentley was on fire in this one hitting 9 threes on his way to 47 points while Lachlan Headlam did his best for the Knights with 29.

WILDCATS 95 – 47 ROVERS

The Wildcats remain on top of the Winter 2022 ladder for another week after they collected a solid win over a depleted Rovers side. Missing Big V Bellarine Storm players Jarvie, Gronbeck, Boyle and Gleeson, the Rovers were no match for top-of-the-table Wildcats who cruised to the 48-point win behind Robbie Kennedy’s 9-three, 29-point outing. For the Rovers, Ben Rigby led the way with 20.

CC EAGLES 86 – 72 PIVOT CITY

The Eagles have halted Pivot City’s chances of a top 2 finish after knocking them off in a round 16 clash of 2nd v 3rd. Slow out of the gates Pivot City enter the quarter-time break down 14 before regaining some momentum to be down 6 at the half. So hot shooting from the Eagles kept the margin out to double digits and while Pivot fought back in the final term, some late shots from the Eagles sealed the 14-point win. Liam McInerney led the way for the Eagles with 20 while Tyler Erard was the leading scorer for Pivot and the game with 24.

SG KINGS 113 – 111 TRY BOYS

A very high-scoring affair in round 16 has seen the South Geelong Kings come away with an impressive 2-point win over Try Boys. In a game where neither team was able to break away from one another, with a 5-point lead to Try Boys a the end of the first quarter being the widest margin of the game, it was a team effort from the Kings with every player scoring in double figures on their way to the win. Jacob Pupavac was great with 24 points while Cooper Handley also chipped in 23. For the Bears, it was Seb Thomason with 34 and Darcy Stiles who finished with 29 including 7 threes. The loss puts the Bears 2 points behind YMCA for fourth place in what is hotting up to be an incredibly close finish to the season.
